Perlite

Perlite an environmental-friendly, ultra-lightweight aggregate, white or light grey in color having a density range of 140-160 kg/m3. It has excellent thermal insulation properties. It also has a highly absorbent surface and a very low density for use in lightweight concrete, fire retardant/insulation plaster or insulating concrete with/without sand or gravel and refractory application. Perlite is an amorphous volcanic glass that occurs naturally and has the unusual property of greatly expanding when heated sufficiently. It is an industrial mineral and a commercial product useful in multiple industries construction and manufacturing, agriculture, biotechnology cosmetics, aquatic filtration and many more.

Application of perlite

  • Due to high insulating qualities and versatility, expanded perlite is widely used in lightweight plasters, concrete, mortar, insulation, ceiling tiles and used to build composite materials that are sandwich-structuredor to create syntactic foam.
  • Perlite insulation is used in high-temperature applications in steel and foundry industries such as ladle topping, hot topping, and risering non-combustible ultralight minerals with excellent insulation and adsorption properties for cryogenic insulators and also used in the explosive industry.
  • Due to thermal and mechanical stability, non-toxicity, and high resistance against microbial attacks and organic solvents, perlite is widely used in biotechnological applications. Perlite serves as an excellent support for immobilization of biocatalysts such as enzymes for bioremediation and sensing applications.
  • In addition to it, Perlite is used in cosmetics as an absorbent and mechanical exfoliant.
